Building energy workforce

pathways and career

opportunities for

California's Inland Empire

Introduction to the Region

The transition to a clean and sustainable energy future depends on a strong, resilient local workforce.

This means easier access to more high-quality, sustainable jobs that strengthen the regional economy.

The energy sector is emerging as one of the fastest-expanding industries in California, creating

opportunities to modernize infrastructure, strengthen the electric grid, and support long-term

economic development. Programs for communities and local leaders are stepping up to steer this

growth in the Inland Empire.

Case Study: I-REN Energy Workforce Gaps Assessment

The Inland Regional Energy Network (I-REN), comprised of Western Riverside Council of Governments

(WRCOG), San Bernardino Council of Governments (SBCOG), and Coachella Valley Association of

Governments (CVAG), serves as a regional convener that connects workforce, education, and industry

stakeholders as Riverside and San Bernardino counties respond to increasing demand for energy

infrastructure. With a growing population of 4 million, the Inland Empire is well-positioned to leverage

the energy sector as a pathway to stable, well-paying careers. By 2030, energy-sector jobs are projected

to grow by 20%. The time to understand workforce gaps and how to recruit, train, and retain skilled

energy workers, is now.
